The name of this layout comes from the location of the first six keys on the upper letter row: Q, W, E, R, T, and Z. Y and Z changed places because of ergonomic reasons since in German the letter Z is used much more often than Y. Also, the German keyboard has special characters — umlauts (üöä) and escet (ß). Additional German letters are located on the right side of the keyboard.
Due to the strong economic and technical influence of Germany, German QWERTZ typewriters spread throughout Eastern and Central Europe. However, each language has had its own modifications depending on the presence of additional letters.
