Terms of use

Terms of use

This Terms of use was last revised on October 29, 2026.

1. General

These Terms of use (the "Terms") set out the terms on which Ratatype Ltd ("Ratatype", "we", "us", "our") gives you access to the Ratatype website and all related services, including all regional and language versions (together, the "Service"). These Terms apply equally to all Ratatype sites, regardless of domain or language.

By registering an account or making a purchase, you accept these Terms. If you do not agree to them, please do not use the Service. Our Privacy Policy explains how we process your personal data, and we recommend that you read it as well.

If you register an account on behalf of a school or a class, or if a teacher has created an account for you, Section 5, "Children and Educational Use", also applies to you and supplements these general Terms.

If you accept these Terms on behalf of a company, school or other organisation, you confirm that you have authority to do so, and "you" in these Terms then means that organisation. If you do not have such authority, or if you do not agree to the Terms, you may not accept them on behalf of that organisation.

To register an account on your own, without the involvement of a school or teacher, you must have reached the minimum age of digital consent in your country (see Section 5 for details). If you have not yet reached the age of majority, by registering on your own you confirm that you have the permission of your parent or legal guardian to use the Service. Younger children can access the Service through a class created by a teacher or school (Section 4), or where a parent or legal guardian registers the account for the child.

Ratatype is constantly testing and improving the Service. Some features described in these Terms may not yet be available to all users or in all countries. We may change, suspend or discontinue, temporarily or permanently, any feature or part of the Service, including the free version, Ratatype Plus, or individual exercises and courses. If such a change materially degrades a service that you have paid for, we will notify you in advance, and you will be able to cancel your subscription and receive a refund for the unused period. We may also show different users different versions of the design, functionality or even prices in order to test them (A/B testing).

2. Registration and Account

To use most features of the Service, you need to create an account. You can do this yourself, by providing an email address, a name and a password or by signing in with Google, or a teacher or school can create your account for learning in a class (for details of such accounts, see Section 4, "Special terms for teachers and school administrators").

When registering on your own, provide a valid email address: it is needed to sign in to your account and to regain access if you forget your password. You may use any name you like. It is displayed in your dashboard and on your certificates. Each certificate has a verification page that anyone who has the link to it can open; the page shows your name, your result and the date on which you took the test. If you study in a class, your name and results are visible to your teacher and, if the teacher has enabled the class leaderboard, to your classmates as well. If you do not want others to see your real name, use a pseudonym. An account is intended for one user only: do not share your login and password with other people and do not share access to your account.

You are responsible for keeping your password confidential and for all activity and any content that appears under your account. If you suspect that someone has accessed your account without permission, notify us immediately at [email protected] and we will help you regain control of your account. Ratatype is not liable for any loss or damage that arises because you failed to keep your password secret.

Do not register an account in the name of another person and do not impersonate anyone else, for example by signing in to the Service under a classmate's name. If you use the Service on a shared device, including a school computer, remember to log out of your account at the end of each session.

If the email address you provide turns out to be invalid or becomes inaccessible, you may lose access to your account with no possibility of recovering it: without a working email address we can neither write to you nor confirm that the account is yours. Ratatype also reserves the right to suspend or delete an account that was created in breach of these Terms, for example to circumvent restrictions or through mass automated registration.

3. Acceptable use

You may use the Service only for lawful purposes and in accordance with these Terms. By using Ratatype, you agree not to:

  • use bots, scripts, macros or other automated software to complete exercises or typing speed tests, or to obtain certificates, in your place: results must reflect your own skills;
  • circumvent the daily exercise limits or other restrictions of the free version by technical means;
  • harass, insult, intimidate or otherwise harm other users, including children who use the Service;
  • upload or distribute through the Service any content that is unlawful, infringes the intellectual property rights of others, or is offensive, discriminatory or obscene;
  • attempt to gain unauthorised access to the Service, to other users' accounts, or to our servers or networks;
  • interfere with the normal operation of the Service, including by placing an excessive load on the servers, or interfere with its operation for other users;
  • upload or distribute through the Service any malicious code, viruses or other harmful scripts;
  • use bots, crawlers or other automated means to copy or download in bulk the exercises, lessons and other content of the Service;
  • impersonate a Ratatype employee or representative.

Ratatype strictly prohibits any content that harms children, including sexual content involving minors. If we find such content or receive a report of it, we will remove it immediately, block the relevant account and report it to the appropriate law enforcement authorities.

If you use the Service as a teacher or a school representative, the additional rules in Section 4, "Special terms for teachers and school administrators", also apply to you.

If we find a breach of these rules, we may warn you, temporarily restrict your access to certain features, or suspend or delete your account, depending on the seriousness of the breach (for details, see Section 12, "Term and termination").

4. Special terms for teachers and school administrators

This section applies to teachers, school administrators and other representatives of educational institutions ("Teacher") who use Ratatype to teach students.

To start working with a class, a Teacher registers with Ratatype on their own and then either registers student accounts or invites students to join the class themselves. We do not check your authority from the school in advance: by creating a class and adding students to it, you confirm that you have permission from your educational institution to do so, and you accept full responsibility for that decision.

By using Ratatype with students, you make that decision on behalf of your educational institution. How this works under data protection law depends on where your school is located.

Schools in the United States. If your students include children under 13, you give consent to the collection of their personal data on behalf of their parents in accordance with COPPA, as permitted for use of the Service for educational purposes. By registering accounts for such students or allowing them to join a class, you confirm that you have authority from your educational institution to do so.

Schools in the United Kingdom, the EU and other countries. Your educational institution determines the purposes and means of processing students' personal data in Ratatype and is the controller of that data. Ratatype processes this data on behalf of the school and on its instructions, solely to provide the Service.

In all cases:

  • we use students' personal data only to provide the Service for educational purposes, as described in our Privacy Policy, and we do not use it for advertising, marketing or profiling; there is no targeted advertising on the site;
  • you are responsible for informing parents about the use of Ratatype in the class and about the processing of their children's personal data; Ratatype does not contact parents itself and does not obtain consent from them directly.

If a student's parent or legal guardian objects to the use of Ratatype or withdraws consent previously given, you must notify us immediately at [email protected] so that we can suspend that student's access to the Service and delete or deactivate their personal data.

As a Teacher, you have access to the personal data of the students in your class, including progress statistics and learning and test results, and you can change a student's personal details (name, email address, password, profile picture) or restrict the student's ability to change them. You can also enable the class leaderboard, in which case the students in your class can see each other's names and results. Enable it only where appropriate for your class and in accordance with your school's rules. You agree to:

  • use this data and these features only for educational purposes and only within the scope of your professional duties;
  • not disclose this data to third parties, except as expressly provided in these Terms, by law, or in a separate agreement between your school and Ratatype;
  • notify us immediately at [email protected] if you learn that someone is impersonating a representative of your educational institution without authority.

Ratatype is not liable if you did not obtain the necessary permission from your school's management or administration before using the Service, or did not consult them about using Ratatype with students.

If your employment with the school ends, hand over access to the class to another authorised member of the school's staff or notify us at [email protected]: a former employee must not retain access to students' personal data.

For more information about how we process students' personal data, see our Privacy Policy.

5. Use by children

Ratatype may be used by children, mainly through classes created by teachers. For students who are below the minimum age of digital consent in their country, the decision to use Ratatype in a class is made by the school or teacher, as described in Section 4, "Special terms for teachers and school administrators".

Only persons who have reached the minimum age of digital consent in their country may register an account on their own, without the involvement of a school or teacher: 13 in the United States under COPPA, and 13 to 16 in the EU and the United Kingdom, depending on the jurisdiction, under the GDPR/UK GDPR. Younger children may also use the Service through an account that their parents or legal guardian register for them.

If you are a parent, legal guardian or any other person and you learn that a child below the age threshold has registered an account on their own, without the involvement of a school or parents, notify us at [email protected] and we will delete the child's personal data and deactivate the account.

For more information about what data we collect about children, how we use and protect it, and about parents' rights, see the relevant section of our Privacy Policy.

6. User content

Ratatype is first and foremost a practice service, not a content-publishing platform, so most of what you create in the Service is your progress in exercises, your typing speed test results and the certificates generated from them. This data and these certificates remain yours: we do not claim ownership of them.

If you upload your own profile picture, you confirm that you have the right to use it and you grant Ratatype a licence to display it in your dashboard and on your page.

If you provide us with feedback, comments or other materials through forms on the site, through our support service or through other channels (together, "user content"), you grant Ratatype a free, non-exclusive, worldwide licence to use, copy and display that user content, solely to the extent necessary to provide, maintain and improve the Service. This licence does not deprive you of your rights in your own content: you remain its author.

You are responsible for any user content that you share through the Service, and you confirm that you have the right to do so. Ratatype may, but is not obliged to, review or moderate such content, and has the right to remove it if it breaches the rules in Section 3, "Acceptable use", of these Terms.

If you leave a review of Ratatype, for example in a survey or in correspondence with us, we may use it anonymously, shortened or edited where necessary without distorting its meaning, in marketing materials, on the site or on social media. We will state your name or other details by which you could be identified only if we first ask you and obtain your consent.

7. Ratatype's intellectual property

The Service, including all lessons, exercises, texts, design, software code and other materials (other than the user content described in Section 6), is owned by Ratatype or by third parties whose materials we use with their permission, and is protected by copyright law and other intellectual property laws. The name "Ratatype", our logo and our other trademarks belong to us: you may not use them without our prior written permission.

Subject to compliance with these Terms, we grant you a limited, personal, non-exclusive and non-transferable licence to access and use the Service, solely for personal or educational purposes. (This licence should not be confused with the paid Ratatype Plus licences that schools and teachers can purchase for a class, which are covered in Section 8.) This licence does not give you the right to:

  • copy or modify the Service or its content, or create derivative works based on them;
  • resell, rent, sublicense or otherwise transfer access to the Service to third parties;
  • use the Service to create a competing product;
  • reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble the Service's software code, except where this is expressly permitted by law;
  • copy or reuse the HTML, CSS, JavaScript or design elements of the Service without our prior written permission;
  • remove or alter copyright notices, logos or other legal notices on the Service.

You may quote short extracts from the Service's materials and share them for non-commercial purposes, including educational ones, provided that you name Ratatype as the source and, where possible, include a link to the site. Teachers may display and print individual exercises for lessons in their own class. This does not permit you to copy the Service or substantial parts of it, to republish them, or to use them in other products.

Ratatype may suspend or revoke this licence if you breach these Terms (for details, see Section 12, "Term and termination").

8. Payments, subscriptions and refunds

The basic features of Ratatype are available free of charge. For a separate fee, we offer:

  • Ratatype Plus: a subscription with extended features for individual users: no promotional banners, no daily exercise limits, faster page loading and a certificate for completing a typing speed test. The set of Ratatype Plus benefits may expand over time;
  • Ratatype Plus for classes: paid licences that a teacher or school purchases to give the students in a class access to Ratatype Plus; each licence is valid for 1 year from the moment it is applied to a particular student, not from the date of purchase;
  • Certificates: paid certificates of course completion or test completion, available separately from the subscription.

If you have received a discount promo code or a free period, the following rules apply to it: a promo code has no cash value and cannot be exchanged for cash or used to obtain a refund of a payment already made; each promo code can be used only once; some promo codes may have an expiry date or a limited number of activations; resale or transfer of promo codes is prohibited. We reserve the right to cancel a promo code, and the benefits obtained through it, if we find that these rules have been abused.

Payments are processed through the Stripe payment system; we do not store your payment card details on our own servers. Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each paid period unless you cancel them beforehand. Before each automatic renewal, we send you an email reminder 3 days in advance, stating the date and the amount to be charged. You can cancel your subscription at any time under "Manage Subscription" on the profile editing page; after cancellation, your access remains active until the end of the period already paid for, and no further charges are made.

Prices may differ depending on the regional or language version of the Ratatype site that you use. In addition, we periodically test different prices, so different users may temporarily see a different price for the same subscription or service. We select participants in such tests at random, and the price does not depend on your personal data or on your behaviour in the Service.

The prices shown on the site are final and include all applicable taxes: this is the amount that will be charged to your card. If your card is held in another currency, your bank may convert the amount at its own exchange rate, so the final amount on your statement may differ slightly.

If the charge for a subscription's automatic renewal fails, the payment system (Stripe) makes several retry attempts. If none of them succeeds, the subscription is cancelled automatically.

If you believe that we have charged you an incorrect amount by mistake, notify us at [email protected] within 30 days, and we will review the matter and correct the error. This does not limit your right to dispute the transaction directly with your bank or payment provider in accordance with applicable law.

The same applies where the payment went through successfully but, because of a technical failure, the service you purchased (access to Ratatype Plus, a class licence or a certificate) was not activated or credited. Let us know, and we will either provide what you paid for or refund your money.

Deleting your account automatically switches off subscription auto-renewal, so no further charges will be made. A period that has already been paid for remains valid until it ends: if you register again before the end of that period, write to us at [email protected] and we will restore the paid access for your new account.

We do not control the operation of Stripe, so payments may sometimes be processed with a delay. If something goes wrong, write to us at [email protected] and we will help you sort it out.

Refunds

If no more than 30 days have passed between the payment and your request, we will always approve a refund. After a refund is processed, access to the purchased service or subscription is cancelled. A refund does not cover services purchased more than 30 days ago. We will reply to your request within 7 days. How long it then takes for the money to appear in your account depends on your bank and is outside our control.

Ratatype reserves the right to change the prices of paid features; we will notify existing subscribers in advance of any material price changes.

The Service may contain links to third-party sites or integrate with third-party services, for example sign-in with Google, synchronisation with Google Classroom, payment processing through Stripe, or links to social networks. Ratatype does not control these third-party sites and services. We are not responsible for their content, privacy policies or practices, or for any damage or loss arising from their use. By using a third-party service through Ratatype, you also agree to that third-party service's terms of use.

If you sign in to Ratatype with a Google account, you can revoke this access at any time in the settings of your Google account. If you (for example, as a teacher) transfer data or content to Google Classroom or another third-party service through an integration with Ratatype, that service, and not us, is responsible for the further handling of that data within it.

We also rely on third-party providers of technical infrastructure, including hosting and a content delivery network, to deliver the Service itself. For more information about which providers are involved and what access to data they have, see our Privacy Policy.

A link to a third-party site does not mean that we endorse its content. If you follow such links, you do so at your own risk.

10. Disclaimer of warranties

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available", without any warranties, express or implied. We do not warrant that the Service will operate without interruption, errors or delays, that it will be available at all times (including during peak loads, updates or maintenance), or that the results of using it will meet your expectations. We also do not warrant that the Service, or files you download through it (for example, certificates), are free of viruses or other malicious code, and we are not liable for any damage caused in this way. The free version of Ratatype remains free until we decide otherwise, and we may change the availability of individual features, including free ones, at any time.

This disclaimer does not limit the rights that the law gives you as a consumer and that cannot be excluded by contract, including under the UK Consumer Rights Act 2015. For schools and other organisations, it applies to the extent permitted by law.

11. Limitation of liability and indemnification

We are liable for foreseeable losses that you suffer as a result of our breach of these Terms or our negligence.

Our total liability under any claims relating to these Terms or the Service is limited to the greater of: the amount you actually paid us for the use of the Service during the 12 months preceding the event giving rise to the claim, or £100.

If you use the Service for purposes other than purely personal ones (for example, for work at a school or company), we are not liable for loss of profit, loss of business opportunity, loss of goodwill or loss of data, or for indirect losses. If you represent a school, company or other organisation, that organisation will, to the extent permitted by law, indemnify us against losses and expenses, including reasonable legal costs, arising from third-party claims relating to its breach of these Terms, its misuse of the Service or its infringement of third-party rights.

Nothing in these Terms limits or excludes our liability where the law does not permit it to be limited or excluded, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.

12. Term and termination

These Terms apply for as long as you use the Service. You may stop using the Service and delete your account at any time, through your account settings or by writing to us at [email protected].

Ratatype may suspend or delete your account, restrict access to certain features, or stop providing the Service altogether, if:

  • you breach these Terms, including Section 3, "Acceptable use";
  • we stop providing the Service generally or in a particular jurisdiction;
  • the law requires it, or we have reasonable grounds to believe that continuing to provide the Service creates a risk for us, other users or third parties.

Where possible and appropriate, we will notify you in advance before suspending or deleting your account and explain the reason.

If we cancel your active paid subscription or licence through no fault of yours, for example because we discontinue a feature or a region, we will refund a proportionate part of the amount paid for the unused period.

After your account is terminated, your access to the Service ends and your personal data is processed in accordance with our Privacy Policy. An active paid subscription or licence remains valid until the end of the period already paid for, as described in Section 8. If your account was created by a teacher or school, termination is also governed by Section 4.

The provisions of these Terms that by their nature are intended to continue after an account is terminated, including those on ownership rights, limitation of liability, indemnification and dispute resolution, remain in effect.

13. Governing law

These Terms, and everything connected with them, are governed by the law of England and Wales.

If you are a consumer and are habitually resident in another country, the mandatory consumer protection laws of your country of residence may additionally apply to you and take precedence where they give you greater protection than the law of England and Wales.

14. Dispute resolution

Before taking any matter to court, please write to us at [email protected]: in most cases we can resolve a dispute without formal proceedings.

If the dispute cannot be resolved in this way, the courts of England and Wales will have exclusive jurisdiction to hear any dispute arising out of or in connection with these Terms.

If you are a consumer, this does not deprive you of the right to bring proceedings in the courts of the place where you live: if you live in Scotland, in the Scottish courts; if you live in Northern Ireland, in the courts of Northern Ireland; and if you live in another country, in the courts of your country, where mandatory consumer protection laws so provide.

We respect intellectual property rights and expect the same from Ratatype users. If you believe that material available through the Service infringes your copyright, send us a notice at [email protected] containing the following information:

  • a description of the material that you believe infringes your rights;
  • a link to, or description of, the location of the material on the Service;
  • your contact details;
  • a statement that you have a good-faith belief that the use is unlawful and not authorised by the rights owner, its representative or the law;
  • a statement that the information in the notice is accurate and that you are the rights owner or are authorised to act on the owner's behalf;
  • your signature, physical or electronic.

On receiving such a notice, we will review it and, where necessary, remove the material or restrict access to it. If you believe that your material was removed by mistake, write to us at the same address with an explanation, and we will review that request as well.

16. Privacy

Our Privacy Policy explains what data we collect, how we use, store and protect it, and what rights you have in relation to your data.

If your school needs a separate data processing agreement (Data Processing Agreement), including to meet FERPA requirements for schools in the United States, write to us at [email protected] and we will discuss terms that suit your educational institution.

We will notify you in advance of material changes to the Privacy Policy, as described in the Policy itself.

17. Changes to these terms

We may update these Terms from time to time, for example to reflect changes to the Service or to the law, or to improve the wording. The date of the latest revision is always stated at the beginning of this document.

If the changes are material, for example if they affect your rights or obligations, we will notify you in advance by email or by a notice on the site, at least 30 days before they take effect. Minor changes, such as correcting errors or clarifying wording, may take effect immediately on publication.

Changes are not retroactive: they apply only for the future.

If the changes affect how we process or disclose students' personal data described in Section 4, "Special terms for teachers and school administrators", we will notify the teacher or school separately and individually, and not only by a general notice on the site.

By continuing to use the Service after the changes take effect, you agree to the updated Terms. If you do not agree with the changes, please stop using the Service and delete your account (Section 12, "Term and termination").

If you have an active paid subscription or licence and you do not agree with material changes, you may cancel it before the changes take effect and receive a refund for the unused period.

18. Miscellaneous

These Terms constitute the entire agreement between you and Ratatype regarding the use of the Service and supersede any prior agreements or statements on that subject.

If any provision of these Terms is held to be invalid or unenforceable, this does not affect the validity of the remaining Terms: the invalid provision is replaced by the closest valid wording in meaning.

Our failure to exercise a right under these Terms on one occasion does not mean that we waive it in the future.

You may not assign or transfer your rights or obligations under these Terms to a third party without our prior written consent. Ratatype may assign its rights and obligations under these Terms, for example in the event of a reorganisation, merger or sale of the business, without your consent.

These Terms do not create any agency, partnership or employment relationship between you and Ratatype, and neither party has authority to act on behalf of the other.

These Terms may be translated into other languages for the convenience of users. If there is any discrepancy between a translated version and the English version, the English version prevails.

Section headings in these Terms are included for convenience only and do not affect the interpretation of the text itself.
