How to clear browser cache — a guide from Ratatype

Do you know why clearing cache is sometimes necessary? It may be needed to keep your browser working properly when a website starts behaving strangely — for example, showing an old version of the site or not displaying updated information.

To speed up website pages load, the browser stores parts of sites: fonts, scripts, styles, images. And sometimes it keeps displaying old information, even if the site has been updated.

Here are examples of situations when you should clear your cache:

  • The site was updated, but the user sees the old version. For example, old buttons, design, or text.
  • Something went wrong after a site update. Buttons don't work, the form doesn't submit, the page looks broken.
  • Problems with login or your account. Clearing the cache sometimes helps if the site won't let you in, freezes, or shows old data. But in this case, people more often also clear cookies or open the site in private mode.
